Diehl ha derivato l'IRIS-T SL dall'omonimo missile aria-aria, aggiungendo un booster posteriore e canister VLS per lancio verticale a 360°.
Dal 2022 il sistema è impiegato in Ucraina con tassi di intercetto molto elevati contro cruise, droni Shahed-136 e munizioni vaganti.
